Dear Lady Brain,
My 6 year old son is extremely curious and asks many questions. Recently he asked me why I had “private” hair.  Next I am sure he will be asking me about my “private” hole.  Obviously I have not yet educated him about pubic hair and female and male anatomy let alone the birds and the bees. I would like your advice about when and how to approach this topic with him and how much detail should I share.    Thanks!  – Mom with “private” hair

Answering questions like these are a natural part of raising curious kids–in fact how you deal with this could set the stage for how you deal with a lot of other personal questions–find out how to talk to your 5 year old (and your 15 year old) about “hair-down-there” and more. Listen in!

Best posting ever on a preschool Google group

Google Group Gone MadDo you ever get overwhelmed by the back and forth on a Yahoo or Google group? Do you ever wonder if this discussion would actually take place face to face? And are there ever things you want to say but hold back? Well don’t! The following posting was in response to a spiraling and heated preschool parents’ debate via a “Google Group.” The following response seemed to have nipped the conversation in the bud. Try it on your Group some time! Names have been shortened to their initials to protect privacy.)

Hi R. et al,

May I respectfully recommend a  Facebook group for
discussion of these issues?

I can’t opt out of the Google group, as it’s the main way I get
information from J. (school director).  But the Facebook group I could simply not
join if I didn’t want to, whereas R., S., and K. could.

Those of us who have multiple, and older, children have often been
discussing parenting issues for many years and are quite tired of
them.  Perhaps if the discussion was about nocturnal emissions, first
periods, and alcohol use I would be more interested.

I am respectfully requesting that you use the G. Google group
only for issues of pertinence to all of the families on the list.

Best,

KM

Get some sleep!

With visions of stickers

With visions of stickers

Have you heard of the latest sensation in parenting? Yes, it’s the early-to-bed bunny! She/he leaves your child stickers and/or love notes when they are in bed with their eyes shut a little earlier than usual (in our case between 7:45 and 8p). But so, as an astute 6 year old, you don’t think some strange bunny is hopping around the house after you are asleep–the bunny actually leaves said items with your parents, and then goes to sleep her/himself! And parents–don’t stay up til midnight watching reruns of Oz–go to bed and do what it takes to get to sweet dreams quickly! The earlier you go to bed the higher your chances of nookie, the other–and often missing– sensation in parenting!
