New Episode: Is popularity all it’s cracked up to be? An interview with bestselling author, Jennifer Solow

What’s the one thing every kid wants? To be liked! What do we want as adults? The same thing! Those feelings never really go away (they don’t!!), and even if you’re cool with being a loner, it’s still nice to have friends.

Bestselling author Jennifer Solow has just published her newest book The Aristobrats–and we thought we should find out from her why climbing the “populadder” is so important!

The characters in her book are in junior high school, but who among you hasn’t had the feeling that you’re still IN junior high? What better petrie dish for popularity could there be?

Called the “anti-Clique” book, Jennifer told us she wanted to write a book where the popular characters weren’t total bitches, and that her daughter could read without being completely corrupted. We thought that was nice. Plus she has a cool glossary with words like “carbo footprint” in it. NO, that’s not a typo. We love them carbs. Take a listen to our interview and find out how Jennifer likes her English Muffins while you’re at it.

Copies of the book are available at Amazon, Barnes&Noble, or your local independent bookseller (Lauren got copies for every 11, 12 and 13 year old girl she knows!)

Want to know more? Jennifer Solow is the acclaimed author of The Booster, and well known for the infamous “Wendy” Snapple campaign. As a professional advertiser, she knows a thing or too about cool, having worked with Spike Jonze, Spike Lee, and Richard Avedon, among others. The Aristobrats is her first middle grade novel.

LYLAS Jennifer!

New Episode: My friend is stealing from me

CLICK TO PLAY EPISODE

Dear Ladies,

I just realized after months of questionable behavior on his part, one of my oldest, dearest friends is on drugs and has stolen from me. I discovered he’s been lying after my ATM card went missing and hundreds of dollars were stolen from my bank account, not to mention painkillers were missing from my medicine cabinet (I recently completed a small surgery). Should I confront him about the money, the drugs or neither?

Burned by a buddy in San Jose

If your friend would not have done that kind of thing before the drug problem, then tell him to stop doing drugs and everything will be hunky dory. No more drugs, no more problem! Ah, if only it were that simple.

You do need to let him know you think he’s got a problem, stick to the facts about what you’ve observed and do your best to remain unemotional. It’s likely he’ll be in denial, but the worst thing you can do is keep enabling the behavior. While it may be tempting to run away from the problem, seeing that he is one of your oldest and dearest friends, think of ways you might be able to help. Is there a treatment program you can recommend? Do you know someone he could talk to? This requires expert intervention and you’ll need to look up local resources that fit the precise problem. In the meantime, lock up the meds and don’t expect to get your money back. (No, you shouldn’t even ask).

(And remember, we’re coming at this from the perspective of what we’d tell our own friends if they came to us with this problem–we can’t diagnose anything, we can only provide our opinion.) Listen in!
